This song reminds me of a pirate, hence the title (also a nod to my beard starting to go gray—yay for middle age!). Parts A and C are some of the first riffs I ever wrote. I remember showing my 9th grade guitar teacher those riffs, and he said they reminded him of a Civil War song. While Parts A and C were written in early high school (1999-2003), Part B was written during college (2003-2007). And Parts D & E were written recently (2023-present).
The entire song is in the Dorian mode (which may contribute to the pirate-y sound), save Part B, which is written in the relative major.
